GOVERNMENT TO CONSULT OVER REGULATIONS OF CANNIBIS AND HEMP FOODSTUFFS

President Ramaphosa Backs Public Consultation on Cannabis and Hemp Regulations

President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized the need for broader stakeholder consultation and public participation in developing new regulations aimed at mitigating health risks associated with foodstuffs containing cannabis and hemp, particularly concerning their impact on minors.

During a briefing with the President, Minister of Health Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi raised concerns about the influx of unregulated imported food products containing cannabis and hemp entering the South African market.

In response to ongoing consultations, the Minister of Health will withdraw the current regulations under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act (Foodstuffs Act), which sought to prohibit the sale, importation, and manufacture of such products. The Department of Health will continue engaging with stakeholders before finalizing and publishing revised regulations.
