Madagascar’s ruling party, Tanora Malagasy Vonona, has lost its parliamentary majority following the latest legislative elections, according to results released Wednesday by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

President Andry Rajoelina’s party secured only 80 out of the 163 seats in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament. Independent candidates claimed 52 seats, while opposition parties won 25.

The commission reported that results from 122 polling stations were excluded due to a fire that destroyed voting materials on May 31.

Voter turnout for the May 29 elections was recorded at just over 48%, a rise from the 43% turnout in 2019.

In November, Rajoelina won a third presidential term in an election that was marked by low voter turnout and an opposition boycott.
