President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed distinguished guests and business leaders at South Africa Night during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on 21 January 2025. The evening celebrated South Africa’s vibrant culture and its significant role on the global stage.
The President marked the country’s historic milestone as the first African nation to hold the G20 Presidency. He emphasized South Africa’s leadership underpinned by Ubuntu, the philosophy of shared humanity, and its commitment to global solidarity, equality, and sustainability.
“Under the guiding principle of Ubuntu, we are reminded of the interconnectedness of humanity,” said Ramaphosa. “It is this principle that underpins South Africa’s vision for our G20 Presidency.”
Highlighting the nation’s economic transformation, Ramaphosa outlined bold reforms aimed at addressing a decade of stagnant growth, state capture, and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. These reforms, he stated, are driving recovery, enhancing competitiveness, and attracting investment.
He also commended the formation of the Government of National Unity following the May 2024 elections, which unified political leaders across party lines to foster stability, growth, and the creation of a capable state. Improved investor confidence and public optimism were cited as results of this collaboration.
“Our journey as a nation has been one of resilience and renewal,” said Ramaphosa. “From the triumph of democracy 30 years ago to our ongoing pursuit of inclusive growth, South Africa has shown that collaboration and determination can shape a brighter future.”
The President highlighted partnerships between government and business to address critical challenges, including energy security, infrastructure gaps, crime, and unemployment. He presented this collaboration as a blueprint for sustainable and inclusive development.
Calling for global unity, Ramaphosa concluded by urging international partners to work together to build a just and equitable world.
“Let us harness the opportunities before us to shape a world that is not only prosperous but just and equitable,” he said.
South Africa Night was a celebration of the country’s progress and a reaffirmation of its commitment to advancing global well-being through cooperation and compassion.
