President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Justice Dunstan Mlambo as the Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa, in accordance with Section 174(3) of the Constitution. The appointment takes effect from Friday, 1 August 2025.
Justice Mlambo has served as the Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court since November 2012.
In a written communication to Chief Justice Mandisa Maya, President Ramaphosa confirmed that the appointment followed consideration of the views expressed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and by political parties represented in the National Assembly.
The President expressed his appreciation to the Chief Justice for the transparent, inclusive, and robust process conducted by the JSC, describing it as a demonstration of the Commission’s commitment to constitutional values.
According to the President, the JSC’s process reinforced public confidence that the appointment was based on merit, constitutional fidelity, and a commitment to the continued transformation and strengthening of the judiciary.
President Ramaphosa also conveyed his gratitude to the incoming Deputy Chief Justice for accepting the role, describing it as a responsibility of critical national importance. He wished Justice Mlambo well in his efforts to strengthen the rule of law, enrich jurisprudence, and uphold the rights of all citizens.
