The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System has announced that its hearings, originally scheduled to begin on 1 September 2025, will be delayed.
In a statement issued by Commission Chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, the postponement was attributed to delays in the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development’s procurement of essential infrastructure.
On 20 August 2025, the Commission indicated that hearings would commence on 1 September, citing commitments from the Department that the necessary infrastructure would be secured in time. Justice Madlanga confirmed that these commitments were not met, making it impossible for the Commission to proceed as planned.
According to the statement, the Commission was otherwise prepared to begin proceedings on 1 September but has been left with no option but to reschedule. Justice Madlanga noted with concern that a significant portion of the Commission’s three-month period, within which it is expected to submit an interim report, has already passed without a single witness being heard.
The Commission has stated it will announce a new starting date once all outstanding requirements have been procured and has assured the public that hearings will begin as soon as possible thereafter.
