President Ramaphosa Receives G20 Experts’ Report on Global Inequality
Cape Town, 4 November 2025 — President Cyril Ramaphosa has received the report of the G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality during a ceremony held at Tuynhuys in Cape Town. The event was attended by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola, Nobel Laureate Professor Joseph Stiglitz, committee members, representatives of Oxfam, and members of the media.
In his remarks, President Ramaphosa described the report as a “seminal” contribution and the first of its kind to be presented for consideration by the G20. He said the document provides a rigorous assessment of the causes and consequences of inequality and outlines practical steps to address it.
The President noted that the report aligns with South Africa’s G20 Presidency priority of placing inequality at the centre of the international agenda, describing inequality as “a betrayal of people’s dignity, an impediment to inclusive growth, and a threat to democracy.”
He reiterated his call for global cooperation to narrow the gap between and within nations, emphasising that governments and societies possess the means and resources to build a fairer world.
President Ramaphosa commended Professor Stiglitz and the committee for producing a report of “great quality and significance,” adding that it provides a solid foundation for a renewed global effort to combat inequality. He said he looks forward to discussing the findings at the G20 Leaders’ Summit to be held in Johannesburg later this month.
The President concluded that the report serves not only the G20 but also the broader international community and all those working toward a more just and equal world.
