The Pan-African Parliament is convening its third ordinary session of the sixth legislative term from June 21 to July 5, 2024, in Midrand, South Africa.
Following preparatory meetings, the opening session took place on Monday, June 24, 2024. Mr. Fortune Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament, outlined the goals for the session, emphasizing the role of parliamentarians in fostering peace and security across the continent. In his address, Mr. Charumbira underscored the importance of education, health, and human rights as fundamental to the development of the African citizen. He also spoke about the ongoing crisis in Palestine, particularly the impact of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The session featured a keynote address by Mr. Adel Abdel Rahman Al-Asoumi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, who expressed gratitude for the invitation and discussed strengthening Arab-African parliamentary cooperation. He called for enhanced coordination to advocate for shared concerns, especially the Palestinian cause.
Additionally, Mrs. Janan Jarrar, the Palestinian Ambassador to South Africa, highlighted the severe hardships faced by the Palestinian people due to ongoing aggression, particularly in Gaza, and commended Algeria’s support for this critical issue.
Representing the National People’s Assembly, Mrs. Bahja El Omili, Chairperson of the Pan-African Parliament’s Committee on Transport, Energy, Industry, Communication, Science, and Technology, and Mr. Mohamed Sakras, a member of the Committee on Rules, Privileges, and Discipline, attended the session.
