20 January 2025

The African National Congress (ANC) convened its first ordinary National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for 2025 from January 18–19 at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre. Following its 113th Anniversary celebrations and the January 8th Statement by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the NEC addressed critical organizational and policy issues to shape the year ahead.

Highlights from the Meeting:

1. Addressing Ithala Bank’s Insolvency Crisis:
The NEC raised concerns over the South African Reserve Bank’s application to liquidate Ithala Bank, which plays a pivotal role in providing financial services to marginalized communities in KwaZulu-Natal. The ANC tasked its Economic Transformation Subcommittee to safeguard the bank, protect jobs, and ensure service continuity, emphasizing a transformative regulatory approach to support financial inclusion.

2. Education Achievements and Future Goals:
Celebrating the record 87.3% matric pass rate for 2024, the NEC commended the efforts of learners, educators, and ANC-led administrations. The party pledged continued focus on school readiness under the new BELA Act and urged NSFAS and private sector players to accelerate funding and support for tertiary education.

3. Commitment to International Solidarity:
The ANC welcomed the ceasefire in Palestine and reiterated its support for the Palestinian cause. It also reaffirmed its stance on seeking justice through the International Court of Justice for alleged atrocities committed during the conflict.

4. Renewal in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal:
In response to electoral losses in these key provinces, the NEC agreed on immediate actions to rebuild structures, foster unity, and strengthen leadership. A leadership reconfiguration proposal for these provinces is expected within a week.

5. Preparation for National Lekgotla:
The upcoming National Lekgotla (January 26–28) will focus on evaluating the implementation of the ANC’s 2024 manifesto and strategizing for the Medium-Term Development Plan.

Key NEC Resolutions:

  • Prioritize organizational unity and leadership collaboration.
  • Deploy NEC members to rebuild branches and improve structures in all provinces.
  • Utilize past leaders’ expertise for the renewal process.
  • Focus on political education to strengthen the ANC’s foundation.

As the NEC charts its course for 2025, its focus remains on advancing South Africa’s transformative agenda, addressing pressing socioeconomic issues, and reinforcing organizational strength.
