Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane, led the country’s delegation to the African Union (AU) Mid-Term Coordination Meeting held in Accra, Ghana.
During his address, Mr. Mpotjoane emphasized the importance of clear and inclusive participation and classification within the AU framework. He underscored that these processes should neither limit nor discriminate against any member state.
“Our ability to effectively contribute to global decisions hinges on our unity and the harmonization of diverse interests among AU member states,” Mr. Mpotjoane stated.
As South Africa’s G20 presidency approaches in 2025, Mr. Mpotjoane urged the AU to intensify efforts to assert its independence in driving its own agenda and financing its participation in the G20.
Lesotho also expressed strong support for the African Union Partnerships Strategy and Policy Framework. This framework is seen as a critical element of ongoing AU reforms, reflecting the commitment of member states to align Africa’s partnerships with the continent’s priorities, values, and principles.
The meeting followed the 45th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, which included Foreign Ministers, delegates from various African nations, and officials from the African Union Commission.
The G20, comprising 19 countries, the African Union, and the European Union, represents 85 percent of the global economy, 75 percent of world trade, and 67 percent of the global population.
