President Nangolo Mbumba has announced a minor cabinet reshuffle, appointing veteran politician John Mutorwa as Namibia’s new Deputy Prime Minister. This change comes in the wake of Mbumba’s ascension to the presidency following the passing of President Hage Geingob on Sunday. Former International Relations and Cooperation Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been elevated to the role of Vice President.
In a statement released on Friday, the presidency explained that these adjustments are aimed at ensuring effective service delivery to the Namibian people. The reshuffle also includes former Information Minister Peya Mushelenga taking over the foreign ministry portfolio.
Mutorwa, a long-serving figure in Namibia’s parliament and cabinet since 1992, will retain his position as Minister of Works and Transport. He is expected to support Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa in disaster risk management and the development of small-to-medium enterprises.
Mushelenga’s former role as Minister of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) has been filled by Emma Theofelus, who previously served as Mushelenga’s deputy. At just 27, Theofelus made headlines as one of Africa’s youngest cabinet ministers when she was appointed in March 2020.
Modestus Amutse has been appointed as the new Deputy Minister of ICT, succeeding Theofelus.
