Cape Town, 25 November 2024 – A significant step in Parliament’s engagement with the media begins today, 25 November 2024, at 11:00 AM, with the launch of its Weekly Committee Cluster Media Briefings. In its ongoing commitment to public accountability, transparency, and openness, this program aims to bridge the gap between Parliament’s work and the public it serves.

The initiative will spotlight the critical work of parliamentary committees, often referred to as the “engines” of Parliament. These committees play a pivotal role in legislative scrutiny, governance oversight, and fostering public participation.

The first session, held at the Imbizo Media Centre, features four key oversight committees addressing crucial aspects of governance and fiscal responsibility:

  • Standing Committee on Finance: Strengthening fiscal discipline and responsibility.
  • Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA): Enhancing efficiency in government supply chains and addressing challenges within state-owned enterprises.
  • Standing Committee on Appropriations: Crafting budgets that prioritize public needs and long-term sustainability.
  • Standing Committee on the Auditor-General: Securing the Auditor-General’s independence and operational capacity.

This briefing series represents a proactive approach to keeping the public informed about Parliament’s work while providing the media with a platform to engage more directly with critical oversight issues.
