President Ramaphosa Appoints Mcebisi Jonas as Special Envoy to the United States
President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mr. Mcebisi Jonas as his Special Envoy to the United States of America. In his new role, Mr. Jonas will serve as the official representative of both the President and the South African government, with a mandate to promote the country’s diplomatic, trade, and bilateral interests.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, Mr. Jonas will be responsible for leading negotiations, building strategic partnerships, and engaging with officials in the U.S. government as well as private sector leaders.
Mr. Jonas is a former Deputy Minister of Finance and was one of four Presidential Investment Envoys appointed in 2018 to attract investment into South Africa. He currently serves as Independent Non-Executive Chairman of the MTN Group, a position he will continue to hold alongside his duties as Special Envoy.
President Ramaphosa described the appointment as a reflection of Mr. Jonas’s distinguished public service and ongoing dedication to advancing South Africa’s national and economic priorities.
The President also reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to its longstanding relationship with the United States, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between the two countries.
