National Assembly of Seychelles Hosts Special Sitting of Seychelles National Youth Assembly

On Monday, August 12, 2024, the National Assembly of Seychelles convened a Special Sitting of the Seychelles National Youth Assembly (SNYA) in honor of International Youth Day 2024. The young members of the SNYA were welcomed into the Chamber to conduct their proceedings as per their usual practices.

Before the session commenced, Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Roger Mancienne addressed the young delegates, highlighting the significance of their roles. Hon. Mancienne underscored the importance of Youth Day as a platform to engage with and foster the development of the next generation of leaders. The Chairperson of the Media, Youth, Sports and Culture Committee, Hon. Wavel Woodcock, also welcomed the SNYA members, wishing them a productive and engaging session.

The sitting followed the National Assembly’s formal protocols, with Young Hon. Speaker Stanio Arissol leading the proceedings, accompanied by Sergeant-at-Arms Mr. Antoine Rose. In his Youth Day statement, Young Hon. Arissol set the tone for the discussions that followed.

The first motion, presented by Young Hon. Trina Low-Lam from Independent School, proposed: “We, the Seychelles National Youth Assembly 19th cohort, urge the government and all technology-related sectors to emphasize the integration of modern digital technologies across various fields such as healthcare, agriculture, environmental conservation, and education to foster innovation and sustainable development.” Young Hon. Chloe Ally from Seychelles Maritime Academy seconded the motion.

The young members debated passionately in support of the motion, advocating for the integration of technology and digital advancements in key sectors. They called for government action to improve access to information, enhance technology in public services, and boost collaboration with industries such as agriculture, fisheries, and energy to elevate the quality of life in Seychelles.

After a series of insightful discussions, Young Hon. Arissol called for a vote, and the motion proposed by Young Hon. Low-Lam was approved unanimously. The session concluded with Young Hon. Arissol expressing gratitude to the National Assembly for hosting the special sitting and then adjourned the meeting.
