KwaZulu-Natal dam levels show a slight decrease this week, landing at 87,4% compared to last week’s 87,9%.
The province’s main water supply system, Umgeni Water Supply System, followed suit and is sitting at 96,4% from last week’s 97,0%.
This, however, is an improvement from last year’s 75,6% during the same period.
Leading in the downward spiral is Nagle dam, which dropped almost 5% this week. The dam now sits at 91,6% from last week’s 96,2%.
It is followed by Bivane Dam, which landed at 98,9% from last week’s 100,2%. Spring Grove dam is at 97,3% from last week’s 98,9%.
Mearns Dam continues to be a cause for concern with the almost two percent drop, currently sitting at 56,6% from last week’s 58,7%.
Most of the dams in the province have remained unchanged this week while sitting comfortably at above-average levels.
The Department’s spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says another dam that they will continue to keep an eye on Hazelmere, which dropped below the halfway mark.
“Hazelmere is sitting at 48,5% this week. This level is unchanged from last week’s, but we are still concerned about the low level.
“The Department is keeping a close on both Hazelmere and Mearns Dams, although the latter is at a better level than the former,” said Ratau.
Ratau says the Department continues to ensure that every household has potable water from taps.
“We continue to roll out projects in the province and work with local municipalities to ensure each home has a running tap. We reiterate our call to residents to use water sparingly, South Africa is a water-scarce country,” he concluded.
