President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep sadness at the passing of Dr. Tito Mboweni, former Minister of Finance, Labour, and Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. Mboweni, who was 65, passed away after a brief illness.

Offering his heartfelt condolences to Mboweni’s family and friends, President Ramaphosa reflected on his prominent role in shaping South Africa’s post-apartheid economic landscape.

Dr. Mboweni made history as the first Minister of Labour in Nelson Mandela’s government, serving from 1994 to 1999. He later became Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, holding that position for a decade starting in 1999. From 2018 to 2021, he served as Minister of Finance under President Ramaphosa’s administration.

Reflecting on Mboweni’s legacy, President Ramaphosa said: “His passing at just 65 is a profound shock, especially given his energetic and warm interactions with South Africans.

“We have lost an exceptional leader who contributed to our nation’s progress as an activist and policy innovator. His commitment to labour rights and fiscal discipline helped shape the country’s economic direction.

“As both Governor of the Reserve Bank and Minister of Finance, Mboweni was instrumental in driving economic transformation while maintaining a global presence as an advocate for developing economies.

“Beyond his professional contributions, Tito’s authenticity and warmth made him beloved by many, with his social media presence and love for Modjadjiskloof’s culinary traditions endearing him to the public.”

President Ramaphosa concluded: “His passing is a great loss. May his soul rest in peace.”

The statement was issued by the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa.
