Parliament to Host 2025 P20 Women’s Parliament

CAPE TOWN – Parliament will host the 2025 P20 Women’s Parliament on 13 and 14 August under the theme “Accelerating Equality, Sustainability and Shared Growth.”

The event aims to strengthen the legislative sector’s role in advancing gender equality, inclusive development and women’s empowerment, while aligning South Africa’s policy priorities with international commitments. The 2025 gathering takes place during key global milestones — the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the tenth year of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) implementation.

In 2021, Parliament adopted the Women’s Charter for Accelerated Development following a 25-year review of the original 1994 Women’s Charter. The Charter reaffirmed commitments to dismantling structural inequality and reinforced Parliament’s role in gender-responsive policymaking and oversight.

The upcoming P20 Women’s Parliament will focus on aligning the Charter with the National Development Plan (NDP 2030), the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the G20 Women’s Empowerment Agenda. Discussions will explore how Parliament can leverage its legislative, oversight and representative functions to advance gender transformation across sectors.

Attendees will include Parliament’s Presiding Officers, women leaders from the African Union, UN Women, the G20, provincial legislatures, NGOs and Chapter 9 institutions. Parliamentary stakeholders will include members of the Multiparty Women’s Caucus, relevant portfolio and select committees, and the Parliamentary Budget Office.
